Built-in tools
Six read-only tools ship with Kerlig, no setup required.
- Read window content: reads the content of the app window you launched Kerlig from, the same extraction that powers using content from other apps.
- List open windows: lists the windows currently open on your Mac, so the AI can tell you what's there or pick one to read.
- Get clipboard: reads the current text on your clipboard.
- Fetch URL: downloads a web page and reads it as text. Only public http(s) addresses are allowed.
- Search chat history: searches your past Kerlig conversations by keywords, optionally within a date range.
- Read chat: opens a specific past conversation found by search, so the AI can quote or continue it.
All built-in tools are read-only. They gather information but never type, click, send, or change anything on your Mac.
Default permissions
Built-in tools are allowed by default. They run without asking, and you see each call in the tool activity line under the answer. You can change any tool to Ask (approve each first use per chat) or Deny (never offered to the model) in Settings → MCP → Built-in tools.
💡Privacy
Your chat history stays in the local encrypted database. When the AI searches it, only the specific snippets a tool retrieves are included in the request to your AI provider.
